Customize Print Settings for Individual Sections
Open a section’s Options menu and choose Customize Print Settings to override your book’s print defaults for that one section. The panel has four tabs: Page Start, Headers & Footers, Content, and Typography. A tab shows a small asterisk when you’ve customized something in it, so you can see at a glance where a section differs from your defaults.
Page Start
- Start Page Side. Force this section to begin on a given side: Default, Recto (Right-hand page), or Verso (Left-hand page). A blank page is inserted if needed.
- Invert First Page Colors. Switch the section’s first page to white text on a black background. Use print page colors for other combinations.
Headers & Footers
This tab controls the section’s running headers, footers, and page numbers, with separate control over the section’s first page and its remaining pages.
- Page Layout Preset
- First Page. Use a different header and footer preset on just the section’s opening page, for example a drop folio in a bottom corner. The opener must be showing headers, footers, or page numbers for this layout to appear.
- Other Pages. The preset for the rest of the section’s pages.
- All Headers & Footers
- Disable on First Page. Remove headers and footers from just the section’s first page. On by default, for a clean chapter opener.
- Disable on All Pages. Remove them from the whole section. (Turning this on hides the first-page, page number, and border options below.)
- Page Numbers
- Show on First Page. Keep the page number on the first page even when its headers and footers are hidden.
- Show on All Pages. Keep page numbers on every page of the section.
- Borders
- Disable on First Page and Disable on All Pages. Hide the decorative header and footer border lines on the first page or the whole section. Configure the borders themselves globally in Print Settings > Headers & Footers > Borders.
Content
- Heading Suppression
- Hide Title, Hide Subtitle, and Hide Image each remove that part of the heading from this section in print.
- Pagination
- Override Widows & Orphans. Turn on to set this section’s own Widows and Orphans values in lines (the minimum lines kept together at the bottom or top of a page).
Typography
Give one section its own body text, without touching the rest of your book. Perfect for a foreword in a different face, or a letter chapter that needs larger type.
Turn on Enable Body Text Override to unlock the controls:
- Font. The body font for this section. Picking a new font resets the weight to its regular value.
- Weight. The font weight for the section’s body text.
- Size & Spacing
- Size. The body text size in points, from 6 to 50 pt.
- Line Spacing. The space between lines as a multiplier, from 1.0 to 2.5.
Apply or Reset
At the bottom of the panel, Apply to Other Sections opens the Apply Print Settings To Other Sections dialog to copy these settings to sections you choose, and Reset to Defaults clears this section’s overrides. A reset can be undone with the history buttons at the bottom of the panel.
