Device-Specific Sections
Control which sections appear in your EPUB versus print output by setting device types. If you only need to swap a paragraph or two inside a chapter, use device-specific blocks instead.
When to Use Device-Specific Sections
- Different ISBNs — Your copyright page may need different ISBN numbers for EPUB and print versions
- Format-specific content — Your About the Author page might include clickable links for EPUB but display URLs as text for print
- Unique layouts — Some sections may need entirely different formatting depending on the output
How to Set Device Type
- Right-click any section in the sidebar
- Select Set Device Type
- Choose EPUB only, print only, or both
The previewer and export process automatically ignore sections that don’t match the selected output format.
Visual Indicators
The sidebar displays icons to identify device-specific sections:
- Phone icon — Section appears only in EPUB
- Book icon — Section appears only in print
- Eye icon with a line through it — Section is hidden and will not render in your book
- No icon — Section appears in both formats
Hidden Sections
Sometimes you want to keep a section inside your book project but leave it out of the final export. Maybe it’s an outline, a draft chapter you are not ready to publish, or notes you want to refer back to later. Set the section to hidden and Lacuna will skip over it when generating EPUB and print files.
To hide a section, right-click it in the sidebar and choose Set Device Type > Hidden. The section stays in your project so you can edit it any time, and the eye icon with a line through it shows you which sections are currently hidden.
