Numbered Chapter Settings
Numbered chapter settings give you full control over how chapter numbers appear in your book. You can customize the format, prefix, placement, and typography of your chapter numbers all in one place.
Format
Choose how your chapter numbers are displayed:
| Format | Example |
|---|---|
| Chapter + Number | Chapter 42 |
| Chapter + Spelled | Chapter Forty-two |
| Chapter + Spelled (capitalized) | Chapter Forty-Two |
| Chapter + Roman | Chapter XLII |
| Number Only | 42 |
| Spelled Only | Forty-two |
| Spelled Only (capitalized) | Forty-Two |
| Roman Only | XLII |
Chapter Prefix
The chapter prefix is the word that appears alongside your chapter number. By default this is “Chapter,” but you can customize it to anything you like. This is especially useful for books formatted in other languages or if you prefer a different label such as “Part,” “Act,” or “Lesson.”
Language
Spelled-out chapter numbers (like “One” or “Forty-Two”) are automatically translated to match the language set on your project. You can change the project language on the book metadata page.
Placement
Control where the chapter prefix appears relative to the chapter number:
- Above: Places the prefix on its own line above the number.
- Same Line: Places the prefix and number side by side on the same line.
- Below: Places the prefix on its own line below the number.
When using Above or Below, you can adjust the spacing between the prefix and the number to get the exact look you want.
Number Text
Customize the typography of the chapter number itself. Turn on Custom Styling to unlock:
- Font: a different typeface for the number
- Size: the size in points
- Letter Spacing: the spacing between characters
- Weight: how heavy the number text is
- Transform: None, CAPS, lower, or Capitalize
Related
- Section Titles: the prefix shares the section title’s styling.
- Heading Spacing: the space around the whole heading area.
