How to Use Device-Specific Blocks
A device-specific block lets you mark any chunk of content as EPUB-only or print-only inside the section you are already working in. You don’t have to split your chapter into two copies. Drop a block in from the toolbar, put whatever you want inside it, and Lacuna will only render that content on the formats you choose.
How to Add a Device-Specific Block
In your editor toolbar, open the containers dropdown and pick Device-Specific Block. Choose the format you want it to render on, then place any content inside it (paragraphs, images, blockquotes, callout boxes, or any other element). That content will only appear on the output formats you selected.
Find Device-Specific Blocks
Open the Elements tab in the project sidebar to find device-specific blocks throughout your book. Any non-paragraph element that lives inside a device-specific block shows a small icon next to it in the results, so you can tell at a glance that it is part of a block. You can also filter the Elements search to show only device-specific blocks. For more on the Elements tab, see search book elements and formatting.
Blocks or Sections
Device-specific blocks and device-specific sections do similar work in different ways. Use whichever keeps your project simpler to manage.
- Use a block when you only need to swap out a paragraph or two inside a chapter. For example, your copyright page can carry a different ISBN for the EPUB and the print edition without you keeping two separate copyright pages.
- Use a section when an entire chapter or page should only appear on one format.
You can mix both in the same book.
