How to Add Footnotes
How to Create a Footnote
- Position your cursor where you want the footnote reference to appear
- Click the footnote icon in your editor toolbar
- Enter your footnote text in the input field that appears
- Click Save to insert the footnote
Your main text will show a small superscript number, and the footnote content will appear at the bottom of the page.
Editing Footnotes
- Click on the footnote reference number in your text
- Modify the footnote content in the editor that appears
- Click Save to update
Edit a Footnote From the Preview
You can also jump to a footnote straight from the e-reader device previewers. Click any footnote marker in the preview and a popup will show the footnote text. A pencil icon in that popup takes you back to the exact spot in the editor and opens the edit dialog so you can update the footnote in one click.
Removing Footnotes
- Click on the footnote reference number
- Select the delete option
- Confirm the deletion
Lacuna automatically renumbers all remaining footnotes in your section.
Footnotes in Different Formats
Footnotes adapt to your output format:
- Print PDFs - Footnotes appear at the bottom of each page with professional styling. You can customize their appearance in Print Ready settings.
- EPUB files - Footnotes become linked endnotes that readers can tap to view and navigate back from. To link to external URLs or other sections of your book without footnote markers, use hyperlinks.
