How to Use Ornamental Breaks

Ornamental breaks are decorative elements that separate scenes or sections within a chapter.

Inserting an Ornamental Break

  1. Place your cursor between the scenes you want to separate
  2. Click the ornamental break button in the editor toolbar

The ornamental break appears centered on its own line in the editor.

Customizing Your Ornamental Breaks

Select an ornamental break to open its style panel. Choose one of four types in the tabs: Space, Text, Line, or Image. Every type has a Position control (left, center, right) and Spacing above and below, plus a Trim Top Spacing on Page Start toggle that removes the space above the break when it starts a new page in print.

Space

Just vertical space with nothing visible, for a clean break. Set how much space sits above and below.

Text

Use text as your break, often symbols like *** or ###. Controls: Text content, Font (or your body font), Weight, Size, and Color.

Line

A horizontal line. Controls: Width (how far it extends), Thickness, and Color.

Image

An image as your break. Upload your own or pick one of Lacuna’s built-in dividers (Floral Line, Hearts, Stars, and more). Set its Alt Text for accessibility, plus its width.

Using Presets

You can save and reuse ornamental break styles with presets. This makes it easy to apply consistent formatting across all ornamental breaks in your book.
