How to Use Lists
Lists are perfect for organizing information into bulleted or numbered items in your book. For tabular data with rows and columns, use tables instead.
How to Create a List
- Position your cursor where you want the list to begin
- Click the list icon in your editor toolbar to choose a bulleted or numbered list
- Type your list items, pressing Enter to add each new item
Customizing Your List
When you select a list, its style panel opens. The panel has three tabs: Markers, Spacing, and Text Styling. Both bulleted and numbered lists share the same settings.
Markers
- Bullet Marker. The marker for bulleted lists: Disc, Circle, Square, or None.
- Ordered Marker. The numbering for numbered lists: 1, 2, 3, a, b, c, A, B, C, i, ii, iii, I, II, III, or None.
Spacing
- Indentation. The Left and Right space that insets the list from the surrounding text.
- Space Between Items. The Gap between one list item and the next.
- Space Around List. The Top and Bottom space above and below the whole list.
This tab also holds the print-only Trim Top Spacing on Page Start setting, described in Trim Top Spacing on Page Start below.
Text Styling
By default, list items use your body text styling. Turn on Enable Text Styling to give them their own look.
Once it is on, you can set:
- Font. Choose the typeface for your list items, or leave it on Inherit from Body to match your body text.
- Size. Set the size in points.
- Line Spacing. Set the space between lines within a list item.
- Text Justification. Turn this on to justify list text, giving it a straight edge on both the left and the right.
Trim Top Spacing on Page Start
When a list happens to land at the very top of a new page, the empty space above it can look awkward. Turn on Trim Top Spacing on Page Start to remove that space so the list sits flush with the top margin. Anywhere else on the page, your spacing stays exactly as you set it. This only happens on page 2 and beyond.
Using Presets
You can save and reuse list styles with presets. This makes it easy to apply consistent formatting across all lists in your book.
Finding Lists
Use the Elements tab in the section sidebar to find all lists in your book and jump directly to any of them.
