Lacuna automatically creates and maintains your table of contents, updating instantly whenever you add, remove, or rearrange sections.
Basic Settings
Click your table of contents section to access formatting options:
Chapter numbers — Show “1. Chapter One” vs. just “Chapter One”

Hierarchy Settings
Subheadings
When enabled, subheadings (H2, H3, etc.) in your content will also appear in the table of contents.
Maximum depth — Controls how many heading levels appear. Depth of 1 shows only H2 headings. Depth of 2 shows H2 and H3. Deeper levels (H4, H5, H6) are included as the value increases.
Numbering style:
None — Subheadings are indented only, no numbers shown
Decimal — Numbers include chapter (e.g., 2.1, 2.2 for Chapter 2’s subheadings)
Decimal (no chapter) — Numbering restarts at 1 for each chapter (e.g., 1, 2, 3)
Section symbol — Uses § prefix with chapter number (e.g., §2.1, §2.2)
Link Styling
Disable link underlines — Remove underlines from TOC entry links for a cleaner look
Print Settings
Show leader dots — Display dotted leader lines between entry titles and page numbers
Book Part Settings
Book Parts have additional table of contents settings that you can control at both a global and section level:
