Table of Contents Section Type

Lacuna automatically creates and maintains your table of contents, updating instantly whenever you add, remove, or rearrange sections.

Basic Settings

Click your table of contents section to access formatting options:

  • Chapter numbers — Show “1. Chapter One” vs. just “Chapter One”
  • Title format — Display title only, subtitle only, or both
  • Title separator — Choose between dash, colon, period, or other separators
  • Section visibility — Control which sections appear in the table

Hierarchy Settings

Subheadings

When enabled, subheadings (H2, H3, etc.) in your content will also appear in the table of contents.

  • Maximum depth — Controls how many heading levels appear. Depth of 1 shows only H2 headings. Depth of 2 shows H2 and H3. Deeper levels (H4, H5, H6) are included as the value increases.
  • Numbering style:
    • None — Subheadings are indented only, no numbers shown
    • Decimal — Numbers include chapter (e.g., 2.1, 2.2 for Chapter 2’s subheadings)
    • Decimal (no chapter) — Numbering restarts at 1 for each chapter (e.g., 1, 2, 3)
    • Section symbol — Uses § prefix with chapter number (e.g., §2.1, §2.2)
  • Disable link underlines — Remove underlines from TOC entry links for a cleaner look
  • Show leader dots — Display dotted leader lines between entry titles and page numbers

Book Part Settings

Book Parts have additional table of contents settings that you can control at both a global and section level:

  • Part spacing — Space above the book part entry
  • Title gap — Space between the book part and its child sections
