How to Use Ornamental Breaks

Ornamental breaks are decorative elements that separate scenes or sections within a chapter.

Inserting an Ornamental Break

  1. Place your cursor between the scenes you want to separate
  2. Click the ornamental break button in the editor toolbar

The ornamental break appears centered on its own line in the editor.

Customizing Your Ornamental Breaks

When you select an ornamental break, the inline style panel appears on the left side of the editor. You can choose from four ornamental break types.

Space

Displays vertical space with no visible element. Use this when you want a clean break without any decoration. You can adjust the amount of space above and below.

Text

Display custom text content as your ornamental break. You can control:

  • Text content — Enter whatever text you want (commonly symbols like *** or ###)
  • Font — Choose a typeface for your ornamental text
  • Font Size — Set the exact size of the text
  • Color — Set a custom color for the text
  • Alignment — Position the text left, center, or right
  • Vertical spacing — Control the space above and below the text

Line

A simple horizontal line. You can control:

  • Width — Set how wide the line extends
  • Thickness — Adjust the line weight
  • Color — Set a custom color for the line
  • Alignment — Position the line left, center, or right
  • Vertical spacing — Control the space above and below the line

Image

Display an image as your ornamental break. You can:

  • Upload your own — Add a custom image that matches your book’s style
  • Use a built-in image — Lacuna comes with a collection of built-in ornamental break images you can use right away. Scroll down in the images panel to browse them.

You can also control alignment, width, and vertical spacing for images.

Using Presets

You can save and reuse ornamental break styles with presets. This makes it easy to apply consistent formatting across all ornamental breaks in your book.
