How to Use Split-Page Background Images
Split-page background images let you create stunning two-page spreads by stretching a single image across both the left and right pages. Lacuna automatically splits your image down the center, placing each half on its respective page. The section will always start on the right side (recto) to ensure your readers see both pages of the spread together when the book is open.
This is perfect for dramatic chapter openers, full-spread illustrations, or any moment in your book where you want the visual impact of an image that flows across the entire open spread.
Add a Split-Page Background Image
- Open the section you want to customize.
- Click the Section Options Menu.
- Select Customize print settings.
- Navigate to the Background images tab.
- Enable the Split-page background image option.
- Choose your image file.
Image Position
Control where your split-page background image anchors across the spread.
- Top — Anchors the image to the top of both pages. The bottom edge may be cropped if the image is taller than the page.
- Center — Centers the image vertically on both pages. Both edges may be cropped equally if the image is larger than the page.
- Bottom — Anchors the image to the bottom of both pages. The top edge may be cropped if the image is taller than the page.
Opacity
Adjust the opacity of your split-page background image to control how much it shows through behind your text. Lowering the opacity creates a softer, more subtle effect that keeps your text readable across both pages.
Full Bleed vs Safe Zone
- Full bleed — Extends the image to the edge of the trimmed pages on both sides. This creates a seamless look with no white borders across the entire spread.
- Safe zone — Keeps the image within the printable margins to avoid any important parts of the image being trimmed during the printing process.
