Front Matter

Front matter is handled differently than your main book content, with special rules for page numbering, headers, and footers.

Front Matter Section Types

These section types are automatically treated as front matter:

  • Title Page
  • Copyright Page
  • Dedication Page
  • Table of Contents
  • Prologue
  • Foreword
  • Preface
  • Introduction

Unknown or untitled sections that appear before your first chapter are also treated as front matter.

Page Numbering

All front matter uses lowercase Roman numerals (i, ii, iii, iv) instead of regular page numbers. This applies to:

  • The pages themselves
  • Table of contents entries for front matter sections

Your main content begins with Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3) starting at the first chapter.

Headers and Footers Behavior

Front matter has specific rules for headers and footers:

First page of any front matter section:

  • Headers and footers are always hidden

Subsequent pages of front matter sections:

  • Headers and footers appear normally
  • Page numbers display as Roman numerals

Exception - Never show headers or footers:

  • Title pages
  • Copyright pages
  • Table of contents pages

These three section types never display headers or footers, even on subsequent pages.

Multi-Page Front Matter

For sections like prologues that span multiple pages, the first page hides headers and footers, while remaining pages display them with Roman numeral page numbers.
