Add Footnotes to Your Book

Footnotes provide additional context, citations, and references without interrupting your narrative flow. They appear at the bottom of the page in print PDFs and as linked notes in digital formats.

Creating Footnotes

  1. Position your cursor where you want the footnote reference to appear
  2. Click the footnote icon in your editor toolbar
  3. Enter your footnote text in the input field that appears
  4. Click Save to insert the footnote

Your main text will show a small superscript number, and the footnote content will appear at the bottom of the page.

Editing Footnotes

To edit existing footnote text:

  1. Click on the footnote reference number in your text
  2. Modify the footnote content in the editor that appears
  3. Click Save to update

Removing Footnotes

To delete a footnote:

  1. Click on the footnote reference number
  2. Select the delete or remove option
  3. Confirm the deletion

When you remove a footnote, Lacuna automatically renumbers all remaining footnotes in your section.

Footnotes in Different Formats

Footnotes adapt to your output format:

  • Print PDFs - Footnotes appear at the bottom of each page with professional styling. You can customize their appearance in Print Ready settings.
  • EPUB files - Footnotes become linked endnotes that readers can tap to view and navigate back from.
